Above: WPA workers made many visual aids for K-12 education. This Viking ship, in a Los Angeles school in 1937, was surely one of the largest. WPA workers also participated in over 39,000 projects to build, repair, and improve school buildings (Final Report on the WPA Program, 1935-43, 1946, p. 135). Today, as evidenced by our underfunded, crumbling, and lead-producing public school systems, we have much less concern for the education and well-being of children. We have decided--either through apathy or by voting for politicians whose primary focus is securing tax breaks for the wealthy (i.e., their donors)--that billionaires are far more important than public health and education.
