WPA Artist: George Washington Hitt

(All images below are courtesy of the National Archives and the New Deal Network.)

The description for this set of photographs reads, "George Hitt, 24 years of age, striken at the age of 10 with an attack of arthritis in its most vicious form. Hitt has been almost completely disabled. His talents for producing graceful designs which he calls "Shadow Pictures" attracted attention and as a WPA Artist he has produced hundreds of silhouettes which have been placed in the Atlanta Museum of Art and in scores of libraries throughout the state."

A historical marker for George Washington Hitt can be viewed here.
